Just before the monthly meeting, the MPG was informed that there was a major intensity 8 earthquake --- hundreds of people were dead, fire had engulfed the city, the National Guard was called in --- so everyone had to leave the building ASAP. Of course this was just a major earthquake drill. Equipped with a camera phone, Franchesca and Arlene took this shot of the group. Good news! --- according to the Fire Department we would have survived!

Banks helping seniors avoid financial abuse
February 27, 2006

BY TERRY SAVAGE SUN-TIMES FINANCE COLUMNIST

Bank robber Willie Sutton once famously explained that he robbed banks because "that's where the money is." These days it's easier to rob senior citizens. A new survey reports a 20 percent increase in elder abuse since 2000, and a significant portion of that abuse is financial.

Adult Protective Services agencies received 565,747 reports of suspected elder abuse in 2004, and that's said to be only a small fraction of the elder abuse that takes place. About 15 percent of substantiated cases involve financial exploitation. Simply put, about 85,000 cases of financial elder exploitation were reported in 2004.

#90 Scam

May 1, 2008

SCAM ALERT: Will pressing #9-0 on your telephone allow scammers to make long-distance calls and charge them to your phone bill?

The scam goes like this: If you receive a phone call on your mobile from any person, saying that, he or she is a company engineer, or telling that they're checking your mobile line, and you have to press # 90 or #09 or any other number. End this call immediately without pressing any numbers. There is a fraud company using a device that once you press #90 or #09 they can access your "SIM" card and make calls at your expense.

This is partly true but the emailed warnings are OVERBLOWN in that very few phone systems are vulnerable to it any more. This scam does not affect residential or cell phone customers -- it only applies to business, hospitals, government agencies and other organizations that still use telephone private branch exchanges (PBXs) rather than Centrex lines to handle their calls.

Alert Our Seniors
March 21, 2008

An elderly woman this past week in San Marino was tied up by two robbers in her home. One of the thieves initially knocked on the door pulling the exact crime that someone (?) in the Monrovia Provider Group described at a meeting some time last year. The thief said he lost his dog and if he could look in the back yard and while doing so the other person (if you can call them that) ran into the front of the house. She noticed them so they tied her up and completely robbed her house. Fortunately, she was ok but obviously shaken.
